Repeat Offender Arrested in Kerala Spa Gang-Rape Case, Faces Further Charges & Potential Community Exclusion
A man with a history of sexual assault has been arrested in connection with a gang-rape at a spa in Thiruvalla, Kerala, and will face additional charges, including potential preventative detention under the Kerala Anti-Social Activities Prevention Act (KAAPA). The district police chief, R. Anand, confirmed the ongoing investigation and commitment to holding all perpetrators accountable.
Investigation Uncovers Extortion Scheme
The arrest of zubin Alexander, also known as “Death Subin” (29), of Kutupuzha Pappanavel, occurred following an incident on February 1st. According to reports,a group of six individuals approached the spa at 3:30 PM demanding “gundapiriv” – a form of protection money. When an employee stated she did not have the funds, she was allegedly subjected to sexual assault.
Alexander, already facing 11 prior rape accusations, was apprehended alongside Berlindas (38). Two individuals where initially arrested, with authorities indicating that four more suspects are currently being sought. A senior official stated that the suspects will be apprehended “soon.”
Preventative Detention and Community Safety
Given Alexander’s extensive criminal record, authorities have decided to invoke KAAPA, a law designed to prevent individuals deemed a threat to public order from remaining free. Following his release from jail, a police report will be submitted to the District Collector outlining Alexander’s potential to disrupt community safety.
“This individual poses a clear and present danger to the community,” a spokesperson for the District Police stated. “We are committed to utilizing all available legal tools to ensure the safety and well-being of our citizens.”
Victim Support and Institutional Scrutiny
the police are prioritizing the well-being of the victim, with the DYSP confirming that a confidential statement will be recorded. Medical examinations have been conducted to gather evidence and provide necessary care.
The investigation extends beyond the immediate assault, encompassing a thorough review of the spa’s operations and the activities of other similar establishments in the district. Authorities are committed to identifying and addressing any systemic issues that may contribute to such crimes.
Allegations of Police Corruption
The investigation has also uncovered allegations of potential corruption within the local police force. A senior official stated that strict action will be taken if claims that some officers were accepting monthly payments from the spa are substantiated. An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) from the Tiruvalla station was previously suspended due to alleged ties to organized crime.
spa Owner’s Shifting Account
The owner of the spa, a resident of Thrissur, initially indicated an intention to file a separate complaint, alleging that he was coerced into demanding money from the employee by another spa owner in Tiruvalla. However, after arriving at the police station on February 7th, the owner only provided a statement regarding the harassment incident and did not formally file a complaint, according to T.R. Jiju. The owner claimed the employee was “tortured as per the quotation given by another spa owner.”
