Nevada Softball Opens 2026 Season with Dominant Win, Competitive Battle at Tiger Classic

Nevada softball kicked off its 2026 campaign with a resounding victory and a hard-fought contest at the Tiger Classic in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on Friday, February 6th. The Wolf Pack demonstrated both offensive firepower and resilience, earning a 9-0 run-rule win over Illinois before challenging nationally-ranked LSU in a 6-2 loss.

Remarkable Start: Wolf Pack Overpower Illinois

The Nevada team began the season with a statement, defeating Illinois 9-0 in just five innings. A key factor in this decisive victory was the stellar performance of freshman Katie Wetteland, who enjoyed a breakout game. Wetteland went 3-for-3 at the plate, launching two home runs and driving in an impressive five rbis.

“Wetteland’s performance really set the tone for our offensive surge,” a team spokesperson noted.

Adding to the offensive explosion,Karolyn Glover also had a perfect day at the plate,going 2-for-2 with two home runs and three RBIs of her own. In the circle, Hailey McLean delivered a commanding debut, pitching the entire game while allowing only three hits and recording six strikeouts.

Battling LSU: A Competitive showing

The second game of the day presented a tougher challenge as Nevada faced No. 16/13 LSU. Despite falling behind 3-0 early, the Wolf Pack refused to back down.Madison Clark showcased her baserunning skills, stealing home on a wild pitch in the third inning to narrow the gap to 3-1.

Nevada continued to fight,and in the top of the sixth,Talia Tretton hit her first home run of the season,bringing the score to 3-2 and keeping the team within striking distance. However,LSU responded in the bottom of the inning,extending their lead and ultimately securing a 6-2 victory.

Tretton proved to be a dual threat, excelling both at the plate and in the circle. She went 2-for-2 with a home run and an RBI, while also striking out four batters despite giving up four runs over five innings. Clark also contributed a strong offensive performance, finishing the game with two hits.

Pro tip – Stealing home is one of the most aggressive and exciting plays in softball, requiring precise timing and a quick runner.

Looking Ahead: continued Competition at the Tiger Classic

Nevada will continue its participation in the Tiger Classic on Saturday, February 7th, with a 10:30 a.m. matchup against NC State, followed by a second game against LSU at 3:30 p.m. The team will look to build on its strong start and continue to demonstrate its competitive spirit against challenging opponents.
