Bungie Reaffirms ‘Marathon’ Release Date, Announces February Server Slam

Bungie has officially set a March 5 release date for its highly anticipated sci-fi extraction shooter, Marathon, following a period of significant development challenges. The announcement came during the February 2026 State of Play presentation, accompanied by the reveal of a server slam scheduled for February 26 through March 2, offering players an early taste of the game.

A Rocky Road to Launch

The path to Marathon’s release has been anything but smooth. Originally unveiled in May 2023 as a reboot of the classic Bungie franchise, the game’s development has been marked by multiple rounds of layoffs and the dismissal of its former director following a misconduct investigation. More recently, the studio initiated a “thorough review” after discovering uncredited artwork within the game, raising concerns among fans about the project’s future and the studio’s overall direction.

The initial launch target of September 23, 2025, was pushed back indefinitely after alpha testing, before a new window of March 2026 was established. This turbulent development cycle has understandably created uncertainty within the gaming community.

Diving into the World of Tau Ceti

Marathon plunges players into the role of a bio-cybernetic “Runner” tasked with scavenging the lost colony of Tau Ceti. According to a PlayStation.Blog post, players can engage in solo runs, team up with crews, or forge temporary alliances using in-game proximity chat as they navigate hostile security forces, rival Runners, and unpredictable environments.

“In Marathon, you’ll scavenge the lost colony of Tau Ceti as a bio-cybernetic Runner,” a company release stated. The core gameplay loop revolves around completing contracts, crafting new builds, and ultimately confronting the challenges presented by the derelict Marathon ship in orbit.

Server Slam Rewards and PlayStation Plus Bonuses

Bungie detailed the rewards awaiting participants in the upcoming server slam. Players will gain pre-launch access to the Perimeter and Dire March zones, along with all six Runner Shells, and the opportunity to take on initial contracts from five distinct factions.

Progress during the server slam will translate into launch-day benefits, including a standard arrival cache for completing the first mission, an enhanced arrival cache at level 10, and a deluxe arrival cache upon reaching level 30. All server slam participants are guaranteed a unique emblem and player banner.

PlayStation Plus subscribers will receive exclusive weapon charms inspired by Ghost of Yōtei, Death Stranding 2, and Helldivers 2 at launch.

A Challenging Genre

The launch of Marathon arrives amidst a competitive landscape for extraction shooters, a genre that demands sustained player engagement to thrive. The game’s success will depend on Bungie’s ability to deliver a compelling and rewarding experience that distinguishes it from its rivals.

Marathon is slated for release on March 5 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X | S. Those eager to learn more about the February 2026 State of Play can find a comprehensive recap of all announcements online.
