March 24 has been established by the International Union Against Tuberculosis and the World Health Organization (WHO) as World Tuberculosis Day, commemorating the discovery of the microbe that causes the disease, the Tuberculosis bacillus, by German physician Robert Koch on March 24, 1882.

Tuberculosis is a disease with a strong presence and significant impact worldwide, mainly targeting countries with low socioeconomic status. In 2021, approximately 10.6 million patients were diagnosed with tuberculosis, with 10% of patients being children. The above is stated by the president of the Hellenic Pulmonology Association (HPA), professor of Pulmonology, EKPA, Stelios Loukidis, on the occasion of today’s World Tuberculosis Day.
