The Danes have nothing to worry about! There is definitely no danger that Queen Margrethe II (83) could become bored as a “pensioner” after her resignation on January 14th.

The Queen has been an active artist all her life and will be able to devote herself entirely to this passion in the future. She paints, draws, crafts and designs tirelessly. She once said in an interview: “There are scraps of paper lying around everywhere I go.” Her artistic streak first became public at the end of the 1970s, when the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy was published in Denmark and she illustrated the books.

Exhibitions were an important part of the Queen’s life. Her work has been shown worldwide since the 1980s, including in the Landesmuseum Zurich, the Kawasaki City Museum in Japan and the Theatermuseum in Düsseldorf.

The Queen has never offered her work for private sale – but she has often given away watercolors, drawings, paper baskets or paintings. Some of these gifts ended up at auction and have usually achieved good prices so far. Some of her watercolors were auctioned for around 20,000 euros.

But Queen Margrethe is not afraid to tackle larger projects. She has designed both the sets and the costumes for several theater performances. In 1986 she drew the designs for the fairy tale “The Shepherdess and the Chimney Sweep”, which was broadcast on Danish TV at the time. Since then she has taken part in eleven theater productions, most recently in 2021 in the play “The Snow Queen” for the concert hall in Copenhagen’s Tivoli.

Will the Queen of Denmark light a cigarette while practicing her art? Margrethe was a heavy smoker throughout her life. Her husband Prince Henrik, who died in 2018, once said about meeting at the embassy dinner in London: “There was this wonderful woman sitting there, surrounded by a cloud of smoke.” After her back operation at the beginning of 2023, the Queen is said to have given up smoking. Doctors had advised her to do so.
