Hong Kong business magnate Martin Lee Ka-shing is embroiled in a legal battle, alleging defamation over claims of an illicit relationship and seeking to compel Google and five YouTube channels to remove what he calls “false” content.
The 54-year-old chairman of Henderson Land Development filed a lawsuit Friday in the High Court against actress Chrissie Chau Sau-na, accusing her of spreading baseless rumors about a “relationship” to boost her public profile.
“Over the past 10 years, Mr. Lee has been the target of a continuous deluge of false and made-up written and video content across mainstream media, major social media and video platforms spanning the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and the broader Chinese-speaking community,” stated Woo Kwan Lee & Lo, the law firm representing Lee.
“Mr. Lee believes that all reasonable ethical and legal boundaries have been crossed, and reached a stage where a reasonable person like Mr. Lee could no longer tolerate,” the firm added.
Legal Action Targets Online Platforms
Lee, the younger son of the late Henderson Land founder Lee Shau-kee, is pursuing an unspecified amount in damages and an injunction to prevent Chau, Google, and the five YouTube channels from further publishing statements he considers defamatory. He has also pledged to donate any awarded damages to charity.
Lee has requested that the defendants issue apologies and remove the allegedly defamatory content from online platforms.
