Mass Demonstration in Tel Aviv in Solidarity with Ombudsman Gali Beharve-Miara

Tel Aviv, Thursday – Hundreds of people gathered in front of the office of the ombudsman Gali Beharve-Miara in Kiryat Yamelat today in a show of support for the embattled official. Organized by veterans of the MM and with the participation of the veterans of 8200, the chairman of the Bar Association, and the “Builders” organization alternative, the demonstration aimed to highlight the ongoing dispute between Beharve-Miara and Justice Minister Yariv Levin.

The protest saw the waving of signs bearing slogans such as “Military woman who will find – the last fortress” and “Et Haruti”. However, what garnered the most attention was a sign raised with Netanyahu’s name next to the inscription “Mein Kampf,” a reference to the book written by Adolf Hitler, leader of the Nazi party in Germany.

The demonstration drew further attention online when a photo of the sign was shared on social media by Yinon Magal, accompanied by the caption: “Now at the left-wing demonstration in Kaplan in support of Yoamshit: Netanyahu’s photo with the caption ‘Mein Kampf’ (Hitler’s book)”.

The dispute between Beharve-Miara and Levin intensified following a letter sent by the Justice Minister to the Legal Advisor to the Government, in which he requested to be notified of a private representation in the petition at the High Court regarding the convening of the committee for the selection of judges. Levin accused Beharve-Miara of failing to represent the government’s interests.

This is the second conflict between Minister Levin and the ombudsman’s office this week. Earlier, the government approved the establishment of the government inspection committee for spy software, leading to a confrontation between Deputy Ombudsman Gil Limon and several ministers. The deputy ombudsman voiced opposition to the committee, citing concerns about exposing methods and processes, leading to a heated exchange with Levin.

The ongoing dispute highlights the tension between the ombudsman’s office and the government, with the protesters demanding support and autonomy for Beharve-Miara. The demonstration sends a strong message that many believe the ombudsman should be able to carry out her duties without political interference.

The situation is expected to continue to develop in the coming days, as the conflict between Beharve-Miara and Levin shows no signs of abating.
