Coming Soon? The authorities in northwestern Nigeria announced today (Sunday) that the children kidnapped by gunmen from their schools two weeks ago were released by the security forces and returned safely to their families, but there is still uncertainty as to whether all the abductees were rescued.

287 students, aged eight to 15, were abducted from their school and middle school in Koriga village in Kaduna state at the start of the school day on March 7, the biggest mass kidnapping incident in Nigeria in three years. Another student was killed in the attack and 25 of the kidnapped children returned to their homes, but the kidnappers demanded a ransom of one billion Nigerian naira (about $690,000) by next Wednesday or they would execute the rest of the children.

The Governor of Kaduna State, Senator Oba Sani, said this morning that the children had been released and thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for “prioritizing the safety and security of Nigerians, especially making sure that the kidnapped children from the Koriga school were released unharmed.” He added that “the Nigerian army also deserves special recognition for showing with courage, determination and commitment that it is possible to weaken criminal elements and restore security to our communities.” “It is indeed a happy day,” he concluded.

The spokesman for the army, Edward Buba, confirmed that the abductees were released in a military operation in the neighboring state of Zamfara, but he spoke of 137 hostages who were released – 76 girls and 61 boys. “The army, in cooperation with the local authorities and government agencies throughout the country in a search and rescue operation, rescued the abductees,” Bubba informed. A security source added that the freed abductees were taken for medical examinations before returning to their families.
