(ANSA) – PESCARA, MARCH 29 – 19 years after the double murder of the lawyer Libero Masi and his wife Emanuela Chelli, which occurred on the night between 1st and 2nd June 2005 and remained without culprits, a new investigation into the case begins on the initiative of the prosecutor Ettore Picardi of Teramo. The couple, both 57 years old, were massacred with machetes in their villa in Nereto (Teramo). The investigations were closed and reopened twice before being closed in 2010: in the decree signed by the then investigating judge of Teramo, Guendalina Buccella, we read that “as regards the hypothesized robbery, the investigations gave negative results, as it was not possible to ignore the meaning of the subsequent discovery of the large sum of money that the lawyer had collected on the afternoon of the murder”. The five suspects, three from Marsican and two from Teramo, were also dismissed: in reference to the first three, the investigations made it possible to “exclude their presence in the Nereto area in a period compatible with the crime, to appreciate the incompatibility of the the ax found in their home with the one used in the Nereto villa and to ascertain that the footprints of the three do not match those found in the Masi house”. Also complicating the investigation was the figure of Massimo Bosco – unemployed and later deceased in Arezzo in 2013 – resident in Val Vibrata at the time of the events, who had accused himself of being responsible, together with two other people, for the murder: he was not believed and was sentenced to two years and ten months for slander. In 2012, the former radical parliamentarian from Teramo, Pio Rapagnà (died in 2018, ed.), forwarded a request to reopen the investigations to the Minister of Justice and the Parliamentary Anti-Mafia Commission to verify the possibility that the murderers may have arrived at the couple’s home “in search of the documents found in Palermo on the previous 17 February in the house of Massimo Ciancimino” and this as a result of mistaken identity.
