Julian Nagelsmann recently appointed Maximilian Beier to the German squad. He is also considered a candidate for the European Championships. Now he admits that he once wanted to break away from football.

European Championship candidate Maximilian Beier from TSG 1899 Hoffenheim actually considered his career as a professional soccer player over when he was younger. During his time at the youth boarding school in Cottbus, he was once plagued by homesickness, the 21-year-old striker told TSG magazine “Spielfeld”.

“During this phase, I also had thoughts about perhaps quitting football altogether,” said Beier. “The distance from my parents and being alone in Cottbus put a lot of strain on me, and at times it was no longer possible.”

“Discuss which of us should ask the saleswoman”

Beier was most recently in national coach Julian Nagelsmann’s national team squad, but has not yet played an international match. “At some point my father deregistered me from everything in Cottbus out of pure concern. Everything was organized for me to stop competing in sports. I was even registered again at a school in my home country,” explained Beier.

The Brandenburg native played for Energie from 2015 to 2018 before joining Hoffenheim. He has already scored 13 goals this Bundesliga season. His former Cottbus coach Patrick Schrade convinced the talent to continue.

Beier also reported that he used to be very shy. “I’ve become more self-confident, I’ve noticed that recently in everyday life,” he said. “For example, in the supermarket he always discussed with my girlfriend which of us should ask the saleswoman where we can find certain items.”
