The collision took place around 7:30 PM on February 9th on the Kyiv-Chop highway, near the village of Kamenny Maidan in the Zvyagel district of the Zhytomyr region. The area was reportedly unlit when Mazepa’s vehicle struck the pedestrian who was crossing the roadway.

Police Investigation Underway

Authorities confirmed that the driver, identified as 49-year-old Igor Mazepa, a resident of Kyiv, was traveling towards the city of Zhytomyr. Despite immediate medical attention, the 60-year-old pedestrian succumbed to their injuries while being transported to a medical facility.

Police Statement: “According to the results of a preliminary examination, the driver of the car was sober.”

Investigators with the GUNP (National Police of Ukraine) in the Zhytomyr region have initiated a pre-trial investigation under Part 2 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, concerning violations of traffic safety regulations. The investigation aims to establish all contributing factors and the precise sequence of events leading to the accident.

Mazepa’s Response

Mazepa released a statement addressing the incident, stating, “In order to prevent possible insinuations, I inform you that I was not tired, did not use any substances prohibited for drivers, which was confirmed by an on-site medical examination, and did not violate any traffic rules.”

He further added, “I am cooperating with the investigation. I’ll provide all the details a little later.”
