A diagnosis of gestational diabetes during pregnancy served as the initial catalyst for Meghan Trainor‘s complete health and fitness conversion, the singer revealed in a recent interview. Trainor,31,attributes her renewed focus on well-being to a desire to be her “strongest” for both her children and her demanding touring schedule, while also acknowledging the surprising backlash she received for her weight loss.
From “All About That Bass” to Prioritizing Health
The grammy winner discussed her health journey during an appearance on FM CASE on Thursday, November 20, responding to public commentary about her physical transformation. “Everyone’s just being like, like, ‘Why are you thin now?’ Like, ‘you were ‘All About That Bass’ girl,'” Trainor recalled, adding, “I was 19 when I came out with that song.”
This shift in focus began during her pregnancy, where a gestational diabetes diagnosis prompted a deep dive into health and fitness. “I’ve been on a fitness journey as I got healthy. And it started with when I was pregnant, I had gestational diabetes. And I was like, ‘Oh, I got to learn about health and fitness,'” she explained.
Driven by Family and Career
Trainor’s motivation extends beyond personal well-being. She emphasized the importance of physical strength for both motherhood and her career. “If I want to tour forever, I got to be at my strongest,” she stated.”If I want to lift up my kids from their crib and not pull out my back.”
Currently,Trainor is dedicated to strength training three times a week, prioritizing overall health. “Now I’m obsessed with like how’s my hormones? How’s my gut? Because I just want to feel good, because this job is hard to do if you don’t feel good,” she shared.
Despite her positive progress, Trainor admitted to being deeply affected by negative reactions to her weight loss.”But I got a lot of hate for being thinner. So that confused me and rattled me,” she confessed.
In March, Trainor publicly addressed the criticism and revealed her decision to use mounjaro, a GLP-1 injectable medication, following the birth of her second child with actor Daryl Sabara. She clarified that this was part of a broader approach, including working with a dietician, making lifestyle changes, and engaging a personal trainer.
At Billboard’s 2025 Women in Music Awards, Trainor reiterated her commitment to a holistic approach.”I’ve been on a journey to be the healthiest, strongest version of myself for my kids and for me,” she said at the time. “Yes, I used science and support (shoutout to Mounjaro!) to help me after my 2nd pregnancy. And I’m so glad I did because I feel great.”
“Still Don’t Care” – A Therapeutic Anthem
Trainor recently released “Still Don’t Care,” the lead single from her upcoming album Toy with Me, as a direct response to the negativity she encountered. She described her social media pages as typically “a friendly, happy, mom-loving place,” but noted they “took a dark turn.”
“I liked the idea of… ‘Let me think about it one more time. Nope, I still don’t care,'” Trainor explained to PEOPLE exclusively. “And I know that when I start singing it, it’ll be my therapy, my exposure therapy.” The song, she hopes, will serve as a powerful affirmation of her self-worth and a rejection of unwarranted criticism.
