The Amazon-produced film, focusing on the former First Lady, received a dismal 6% rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, earning it a “rotten” designation. That makes it the worst-reviewed of current releases, substantially trailing Sam Raimi’s thriller “Get Help” (94%) and the Jason Statham action film “Shelter” (64%).
The documentary retraces the 20 days leading up to Donald Trump’s inauguration. Amazon invested tens of millions of dollars-an estimated $40 million total-in the project.
CNN’s chief data analyst, Harry Enten, predicted on Thursday that the film about the former president’s wife would generate between $1 million and $5 million in revenue.
Critics have been harsh. Donald Clarke of irish Times called the documentary “shameless propaganda,” but added, “not active and hammered propaganda…more seeking to provoke narcolepsy in its spectators than to galvanize them for mass parades. The Triumph of Boredom perhaps.”
William Bibbiani of The Wrap commented, “I have no idea why she agreed to let this film come out, because Brett Ratner would be incapable of finding any humanity in a funeral.”
Despite the negative reception, Melania isn’t the worst-reviewed film of all time. Several films have received even lower scores on Rotten Tomatoes, with some achieving a rare 0% rating.
The 2002 action film becks vs.Sever: Deadly Showdown, starring Antonio Banderas and Lucy Liu, is one example.
Here are other films that also received a 0% rating:
– Gotti (2018) with John Travolta
– 1000 Words (2012) with Eddie Murphy
– Pinocchio (2002) with Roberto benigni
– highlander: the return (1991) with Christophe Lambert and Sean Connery
