The Meliá hotel chain is studying business opportunities in the regions of Girona. Alberto Lalinde, general manager of Meliá in Catalonia, Valencia and the Balearic Islands, assured this a few days ago during the presentation of the agreement to reopen the Juan Carlos I hotel in Barcelona. “Our focus as a company in Catalonia continues to grow. We are analyzing projects, no longer in the city of Barcelona, but in the province of Girona and Tarragona”, emphasized Lalinde.

Meliá does not currently have any establishments in the regions of Girona, but it has plans to have a presence there again. After the pandemic, the Mallorcan chain left the city of Girona, where it had been managing a 4-star hotel with more than a hundred rooms next to El Corte Inglés for decades.

Recently, however, he announced an agreement to manage the former Gran Hotel Monterrey dand Lloret de Mar with which the hotel company arrives on the Costa Brava, thanks to an agreement with Okami Hotels, currently managing the property.

The future Meliá Lloret de Mar, the name the establishment will receive, hopes to open its doors in the second quarter of 2024, in time for the start of the season. Before opening to the public, the hotel will be renovated to meet the standards of the Meliá Hotels & Resorts brand. After the remodeling, the hotel will have 200 rooms, two outdoor swimming pools and a solarium. The “wellness” area will have a gym and a spa, as well as two restaurants and a bar. The five-star establishment will be the first to operate on the Costa Brava

“Meliá is a company with Mediterranean origins and, for this reason, we will continue to bet on Spain’s holiday destinations and the repositioning of emblematic hotels”, Meliá’s vice-president and CEO, Gabriel Escarrer, assured in June. «The proximity to the city of Barcelona makes it an establishment with great potential for the MICE segment», according to the hotelier.

Increase in profit

Meliá Hotels International recorded a consolidated net profit of 46.2 million euros during the first half of this yearcompared to 3.7 million in 2022, while revenues, excluding capital gains, increased by 22.7%, up to 909.7 million euros, as reported by the company to the National Market Commission of Values.

The hotel company assures that although these results are not fully comparable with those of the same period in 2022 (due to the incidence of the Omicron variant during the first quarter of last year), these “show the strength of sustained demand and prelude to a better third quarter than the previous year, with employment forecast and rates slightly higher than the previous summer.’

The company closed the semester with a gross operating result (Ebitda) of 218.5 million euros (+33.8%), ensuring that the 475 million (excluding capital gains) that were committed by the president of group, Gabriel Escarrer, during the recent shareholders’ meeting.
