  • According to the OECD, the ideal is for there to be 9 nurses for every thousand inhabitants; however, in Mexico there are 2.8.
  • Low salaries, the medical environment and the pandemic are some of the factors that have led to the deficit of nursing personnel in Mexico.
  • They are mainly lacking in the first level of medical care, which has affected guaranteeing services to the population.

The basis within the field of health is teamwork because thanks to the participation of various areas, comprehensive care is offered. Although one of the problems that occur in countries like Mexico is the lack of personnel, both doctors and nurses. It is a situation that has been generated over the years and today the consequences can be observed.

In this sense, Mexico has a deficit of medical personnel, although there has been a growth of health experts, it has not been enough and it can be seen in nursing professionals, mainly in the first level of medical care.

This was exposed by the researcher, nurse and Mtra. Audelia García Barenca during her conference “Safe endowment and risk reduction”during the Third International Nursing Congress “A boost for Global Health”. The event was jointly organized by the Decentralized Public Organization of Health Services of the Municipality of Zapopan (OPD SSMZ) and the Autonomous University of Guadalajara (UAG).

In Mexico, the endowment of nursing human resources in health institutions presents an improvement to guarantee specialized care and with scientific foundation for users at the three levels of medical care.

However, there are factors that influence the guarantee of the nursing service, including the lack of nursing human resources at all levels of care, especially at the first level.

“This is due to several factors, including the Covid-19 pandemic, the medical environment, the social and political environment, these last three come together, since, in the absence of adequate policies, with depressed social environments and environments, the levels of quality in the service go down”.

He then added that public policies must be created to invest more in the health sector, but at the same time promote better wages and job opportunities for this much-needed health sector.

According to data from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)In Mexico, the ideal is that there are 9 nurses for every thousand inhabitants, but there are only 2.8, there is a deficit of 6.2.
