While Mumbai captain Rohit Sharma and Ishant Kishan were the opening batsmen, Mukesh Chaudhary, who bowled the first over, showed quality bowling and guided both of them to the pavilion for a zero run. He again bowled the 3rd over, knocking out Dewalt Privice by 4 runs. Mumbai stumbled to add a run in the power play as they snatched wickets in the next overs.

Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Verma hit a six and three fours respectively. Hrithik Shokeen followed with 25 and Pollard with 14.
Meanwhile, Tilak Verma, who was showing his best play, blasted a fifty. He played unbeaten till the end and scored 51 off 43 balls with 2 sixes and 3 fours. Jaidev Unadkat, who was at the other end with him, scored 19 runs. In the end, at the end of 20 overs, Mumbai Indians added 155 runs for the loss of 7 wickets. The Chennai Super Kings set a target of 156 for victory.

Chennai opener Rudraj Kejriwal, who chased down the winning target of 156 runs, tied the innings at zero. Mitchell Santner, who chased down 2 fours, was out for 11 runs. Another opener, Robin Uthappa, who gave Chennai a good start, was dismissed for 30 off 25 balls with two sixes and two fours. Dubey was out for 13 after flying a six.

With Chennai needing 17 off the last six balls to win, the Dhoni-Pretorius duo on the field were bowled out for 22 by Pretorius, who was bowled out for 22 by Unadkat. Bravo hit the 2nd ball to take a run, Dhoni won the toss and elected to field. Chased a four off the 4th ball and scored 2 off the 5th ball.
Now Chennai needed 4 runs off 1 ball to win. The excitement that was already contagious in the game was going to peak again. However, Dhoni, who was cool on the field, chased down a low-full toss ball towards the boundary line in the direction of the pine leg and ended the match in his own style. Chennai thrashed Mumbai by 3 wickets to enjoy a thrilling victory.
