Justine Triet Announces New Psychological Thriller “Fonda” Following “Anatomy of a Fall” Success
Following her critically acclaimed and award-winning film Anatomy of a Fall, French director Justine Triet is set to begin filming a new English-language psychological thriller titled Fonda this spring. The announcement, made Tuesday, January 27, signals a continued ascent for Triet, who has become a sought-after voice in international cinema.
From Palme d’Or to Hollywood’s Doorstep
Triet’s 2023 film, Anatomy of a Fall, captivated audiences and critics alike, earning the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and garnering numerous accolades, including several Césars and an Oscar win for Best Original Screenplay. This success has opened doors in Hollywood, with Triet now poised to direct a project featuring a notable cast.
According to a release from Les Films de Pierre, Fonda will star Mia Goth (Frankenstein) and Frank Dillane (Urchin), with potential involvement from Oscar-winning actress Allison Janney (I, Tonya). Reports from Deadline also suggest that Andrew Scott is in talks to join the ensemble.
Exploring Grief and Obsession
Triet, who co-wrote Anatomy of a Fall with Arthur Harari, is also writing the screenplay for Fonda, marking her fifth feature film and her first entirely in English. The film is described as a “psychological thriller” unfolding within a “seemingly idyllic closed space,” delving into the complex themes of mourning and obsession.
A company spokesperson clarified that the film’s title is not a reference to the legendary Hollywood family—Henry Fonda and his children Jane and Peter—but rather to the name of a central institution within the narrative.
A Champion for Women in Film
Triet’s recent recognition extends beyond critical acclaim. In 2024, she became the second woman to win the César Award for Best Director, dedicating the honor “to all women (…) to those who succeed and those who fail, those who have been hurt and who free themselves by speaking, and those who cannot do it.” This statement underscores her commitment to amplifying female voices within the film industry.
The upcoming release of Fonda promises to further solidify Justine Triet’s position as a leading figure in contemporary cinema, offering a compelling exploration of the human psyche and continuing her trajectory of thought-provoking storytelling.
