Michigan gymnastics Welcomes highly-Rated Recruit Joe Hale Hale to Defending Champions

A promising new talent has arrived in Ann Arbor, as three-star recruit Joe Hale Hale joins the University of Michigan gymnastics team, poised to contribute to thier quest for continued success. Hale, a standout from Copperas Cove, Texas, brings a strong competitive background and a deeply held personal philosophy to the Wolverines’ roster.

From Texas Roots to maize and Blue

Hale, a Kinesiology major entering the Class of 2029, has already demonstrated important potential in the sport. His junior career highlights include a fourth-place finish at the 2025 Developmental Nationals (Level 10, age 18) and a championship title at the 2025 elite team Cup representing Region 3. These accomplishments underscore his dedication and skill, setting the stage for his collegiate career.

A Foundation of Faith and Family

Beyond his athletic achievements, Hale emphasizes the importance of his personal values. “I think the thing I most want people to know about me is that I’m a Christian,” he stated.”That’s a very important part of my life. Problably the most critically important.” He also credits his family – comprised of three sisters and one brother – for their support, noting he is the only one in his immediate family pursuing gymnastics. He described a childhood filled with various sports before discovering his passion. “I did a bunch of sports, but then I started doing flips in the backyard, and gymnastics just stuck.”

Why Michigan? A Long-Held Dream

The decision to attend the university of Michigan wasn’t a recent one for Hale. He shared a longstanding connection to the program, recalling attending camps as a child. “I used to come to camps here when I was little, and always thought it was super cool. I loved seeing those guys do what they do and wanted to be a part of it.” His recent recruiting trip solidified his choice. “I was just impressed by the team habitat, the team atmosphere. Everyone here is super friendly and very welcoming and respectful, no matter what your background is. Michigan just felt like the place for me.”

team First: A Collaborative Spirit

Hale’s commitment extends beyond individual performance. He emphasizes the importance of teamwork, stating, “Just being a part of this team…we are one whole team.” Despite a recent ankle injury sustained after the USA Championships, Hale remains focused on contributing to the Wolverines’ collective success. While acknowledging the potential to compete on floor and vault, he expressed a willingness to support his teammates even if sidelined.

Embracing the Challenge and a New environment

Adjusting to the collegiate environment has been an exciting experience for Hale.He described the initial immersion into campus life, from receiving team gear to participating in events like throwing t-shirts at a volleyball game and attending football games. “Everything is so exciting and new,” he said. He also acknowledged the heightened level of competition. “It’s humbling…at my club, I was, like, the best guy, and here I’m surrounded by people better than me. It can be intimidating, but it’s more inspiring than anything else.”

Looking ahead: Building on a Legacy

According to an internal assessment, Hale is one of three incoming three-star recruits – alongside chase Pappas (⭐️⭐️⭐️) and that is, Osuna (⭐️⭐️⭐️) – expected to contribute to the Wolverines’ continued dominance. Hale was the only freshman on the UM roster to compete at the 2025 USA Championships, finishing 29th all-around on day one in the senior division. The University of Michigan will be relying on these athletes to carry on the program’s proud tradition as they aim to defend their National Championship this April.
