Quick-Thinking Intervention at Childrens World Early Learning Center

The incident unfolded Monday morning inside a classroom at the Childrens World Early Learning Center on Sheldon Road in Canton, Michigan. A toddler brought a loaded Glock pistol into the facility inside a backpack, according to local authorities. The firearm remained in a holster when the toddler brought it into the building.

A vigilant teacher assigned to the room witnessed the child taking out the weapon and intervened immediately. Police Chief Joseph Bialy credited the staff’s swift action with averting a catastrophe, noting that surveillance footage captured the entire sequence. The quick-thinking daycare worker stopped a potentially deadly situation before anyone could be harmed.

I’ve watched the video. I’ve seen what their staff did, he said at a news conference Monday. And they were prepared and ready to be able to remove this firearm and keep all the kids safe.

One of the parents is a law enforcement officer in a neighboring jurisdiction, Bialy said, though that was not the parent who was taken into custody. Police Chief Joseph Bialy said he did not believe the weapon was a service weapon. The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office is currently responsible for determining whether to file charges against a parent whose child brought a loaded firearm to a Canton Township daycare facility. A spokesperson for the prosecutor’s office said early in the afternoon Sept. 29 she expected a charging decision to be made that day, and the parent is expected to be arraigned on Thursday.

Daycare Center Implements Strict New Backpack Checks

Following the discovery, facility leadership took swift administrative steps regarding the family involved. The childcare center has removed the family from its enrollment records, and as an obligation to maintain the safety and security of all children and staff, Adrienne Bogedain, director of the facility, stated via email that new protocols such as checking backpacks have been adopted following the event.

Daycare director Adrienne Bogedain praised the immediate response by teachers to keep the day care’s children safe. Staff members maintained their composure throughout the event, ensuring that no one was hurt or injured during the morning hours.

Broader Concerns Over Unsecured Firearms

Chief Bialy emphasized during a news conference that investigators found no indication of malicious intent from anyone involved in the incident. Instead, he pointed directly to the importance of proper firearm storage.

I don’t think there was any ill intent by truly anyone involved. I think it really falls back on safe security of a firearm, making sure that we know where our firearms are located, that they are not accessible to anyone.
