Google Replaces Google Assistant With Gemini Across Android Devices

Google is officially removing Google Assistant from Android devices and replacing it with Gemini.

The Final Phase of Google Assistant’s Shutdown on Android

Google has officially started discontinuing Google Assistant on Android devices, executing the final phase of a shutdown. The tech giant first warned users in August through an email campaign, stating that access to the traditional voice assistant would end starting September 3.

For users attempting to hold onto the familiar interface, the option to revert has entirely vanished. Within the Gemini app’s account menu, the Switch to Google Assistant setting has been removed, leaving owners of devices running Google app stable version 17.60 and beta version 17.62 stuck permanently with Gemini.

Impact on Paired Accessories and Smart Ecosystems

The forced migration extends far beyond smartphones and tablets. The rollout affects a broad spectrum of connected hardware, including Wear OS watches, headphones, and Android Auto projected from mobile devices. Drivers relying on car dashboards have reported encountering unexpected conversational loops and syntax errors while trying to handle navigation and media controls.

However, the transition spares certain stationary hardware for now. Google Nest and Google Home smart speakers and displays retain Google Assistant, alongside cars equipped with built-in Google software. Yet mobile users find themselves navigating a new reality where power-button long-presses and corner swipes summon Gemini by default.

User Backlash and Everyday Reliability Concerns

Across various communities including Reddit, user reception to the forced swap has leaned heavily negative. Tech enthusiasts and daily users argue that Gemini lacks the reliable offline command support and smart home automation consistency that Google Assistant offered.

“Does Gemini still play the ‘wrong’ version of the song you request it to? When you say, ‘Hey Google, play ,Bohemian Rhapsody, by Queen,’ then (it) gives you the version of the song from ‘The Muppets’? Or struggle to play anything but a remix of popular EDM songs?”

Beyond entertainment hiccups, drivers utilizing Android Auto have flagged issues where the AI talks excessively, gets stuck in confirmation loops for contacts, or falsely claims it cannot assist with media playback while vehicles are in motion.

Security Additions and Divergent Hardware Launches

Amid the software upheaval, ecosystem developments continue to unfold.

At the same time, hardware expansion moves forward in select regions. Google announced the upcoming release of the Googlebook laptop starting at $2,299 RRP, featuring a Level 5 security-certified hypervisor and 12 months of Gemini Advanced tools via a Google AI Pro subscription trial priced at A$32.99 per month after expiration.
