Sheinbaum Cancels World Cup Presentation, Addresses Michoacán violence & manzo Assassination

President Claudia Sheinbaum redirected her public schedule to address the escalating violence in Michoacán following the assassination of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo, canceling a planned presentation for the 2026 World Cup. The shift in focus underscores the gravity of the situation and the governance’s commitment to addressing insecurity in the region.

Response to the Uruapan Mayor’s Murder

Sheinbaum dedicated her regular press conference to detailing the government’s response to the murder of Mayor Manzo and the broader context of violence plaguing Michoacán. She emphasized that the government’s strategy centers on addressing the root causes of crime, rejecting calls for a renewed “war on drugs” that she argues previously exacerbated the problem. “The strength of the state is justice,” Sheinbaum asserted, “there are those who call for militarization and war, but that did not work. What’s more, it was what led to the situation of violence in Michoacán. There will not be another war against drugs.”

The president responded to criticism following Manzo’s death, characterizing some reactions as opportunistic. “It is a barrage

security for Manzo’s Family & Investigation Findings

The president announced that she had personally spoken with the wife and brother of Carlos Manzo to offer condolences and assurances of support. Sheinbaum directed Secretary of the Interior Rosa Icela Rodríguez to provide security to the family, stating, “let him be very close at the request they ask us.”

Initial investigations have revealed no evidence linking Manzo’s bodyguards to the crime. Secretary of Security Omar García Harfuch stated,”There is no knowledge that their bodyguards have links to organized crime; in fact,it is one of the bodyguards who kills the attacker.” General ricardo Trevilla, Secretary of National Defence, added that Manzo had specifically requested municipal police officers for his security detail in december, citing familiarity and trust. “In December there was a risk analysis and he asked that his security be in charge of the municipal police as they were people he knew and with whom he had confidence,” Trevilla explained.

Concerns Over Planned November 15th March

While acknowledging the legitimacy of protests following the mayor’s murder, Sheinbaum questioned the motivations behind calls for a larger mobilization on November 15th. “We will talk about it later, if you want,” she said, adding, “On the one hand, recognize the indignation over what happened in Michoacán, but, conversely, denounce this situation because it is also important to say what they proposed for Michoacán.” She reiterated the government’s commitment to not abandoning Michoacán in the face of ongoing violence.
