The technology giant Microsoft disclosed this Wednesday that it received a notification from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) of the United States that demands that it pay 28.9 billion dollars (about 27,212 million euros) in back taxes to that agency, a figure with which the company does not agree.

Microsoft reported that notification in a document delivered to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to fulfill the responsibility of announcing to that regulatory body important events that shareholders should be aware of.

According to the company, the IRS dispute concerns profits allocated by the company between countries and jurisdictions. between 2004 and 2013, that were subjected to an audit, and specifically the agency claims 28.9 billion dollars plus penalties and interest.

Microsoft assures that already paid 10 billion dollars in taxes and that are not reflected in the proposed adjustments made by the IRS, so it is prepared to make an administrative appeal and, if necessary, go to court.

“Microsoft does not agree with these proposed adjustments and file an appeal with the IRS, a process that is expected to take several years,” the company said in the document to the SEC.

“We believe we have always followed IRS rules and paid the taxes we owe in the US and around the world,” he added.
