Microsoft is offering voluntary departure packages to tens of thousands of employees across four countries, including staff in artificial intelligence and development divisions. The workforce reduction follows massive infrastructure investments in AI and recent corporate restructuring, with eligible workers required to make their final decisions by December.
The technology giant announced the sweeping workforce program for tens of thousands of employees, establishing a voluntary exit pathway that includes financial compensation packages and career planning resources. The initiative spans the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and India, though the company confirmed that local operations are not affected at this stage.
Divisions Included and Excluded in the Global Exit Plan
The exit offers target several core operational units across the organization. According to financial and corporate reporting, eligible employees include personnel working within artificial intelligence initiatives, Copilot development, Windows systems, the Xbox gaming division, human resources, and finance departments.
At the same time, other specialized teams—specifically certain sales, marketing, and information security engineering units—were carved out of the restructuring plan and will not participate.

Internal Guidelines and Executive Statements on Workforce Flexibility
Corporate leadership emphasized that the program is structured as a choice rather than mandatory layoffs, giving qualifying personnel time to evaluate their career paths. Amy Coleman, senior vice president and chief human resources officer, detailed the strategic shift in an internal memo to staff.
The voluntary departure program reflects an important part of how we are changing our approach to change: more flexibility, and where possible, more ways for employees to shape their next chapter.

Coleman noted that the current framework draws direct lessons from an earlier voluntary retirement initiative launched earlier in the year.
Deadlines and the Broader Context of Recent Workforce Cuts
Eligible personnel must submit their final decisions throughout December, with departures scheduled to take effect on December 31. This initiative follows a series of workforce reductions over the past year. In April, the company introduced a similar voluntary exit program aimed at approximately 9,000 long-term workers in the United States—an offer ultimately accepted by nearly one-third of those eligible. That effort was followed in July by the layoff of roughly 4,800 workers, amounting to about 2.1 percent of total headcount, as part of a broader corporate reorganization.
The restructuring coincides with heavy capital allocation toward building artificial intelligence infrastructure, expanding cloud services, and scaling data centers to maintain a competitive edge against rival technology giants.
