In November 2023, Texas A&M made the stunning decision to fire Jimbo Fisher, the coach who had signed a lucrative 10-year, $95 million contract just two years prior. The move came after a disappointing 7-5 regular season and signaled a desire for a swift return to national prominence. The search for Fisher’s replacement quickly focused on Kentucky’s Mark Stoops, a coach who had quietly built a consistent winner in Lexington.
stoops had established himself as a proven program builder, leading the Wildcats to eight consecutive bowl appearances and a pair of 10-win seasons – a remarkable feat at one of the SEC’s most challenging programs. “I was pursued pretty aggressively by them and we’ll just leave it at that out of respect for everybody involved,” Stoops stated in 2024, acknowledging the intensity of the Aggies’ interest.
Though,the pursuit of Stoops was far from smooth. Reports surfaced that a deal was close to completion, but the news leaked, creating complications for both institutions. A source close to the situation indicated that Stoops’ camp believed an agreement was in place, even informing confidants of his impending departure. Texas A&M regent Robert Albritton later told The Washington Post that he intervened to halt a contract proposed by then-athletic director Ross Bjork, though another source claimed the board was simply presented with a final list of candidates. Bjork, at the time, acknowledged the leak but maintained the university was still evaluating all options. “It ain’t over until it’s over,” he said. “We wanted to make sure that we engaged with our final group of candidates as long as possible, right? So I don’t know how all of that got out.”
Ultimately, the Aggies pivoted, and Mike Elko, a familiar face with deep ties to the program, emerged as the preferred choice. While some Aggie fans questioned whether Stoops possessed the ceiling to deliver a national championship, they saw in Elko a coach who understood the unique culture of Texas A&M.
