From the Casa de Nariño, the Minister of Mines and Energy, Andrés Camacho, reiterated the commitment to avoid possible energy rationing in the country.

In a public statement, he highlighted the importance of act promptly in the face of the worsening climate emergencyas indicated by the latest meteorological reports from IDEAM and the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development.

The Minister promised to inform Colombians daily about the energy situation and to lead, in a concerted manner, joint actions to confront the El Niño phenomenon. In this sense, he announced a series of measures that will be implemented to strengthen the response capacity to the risks associated with this climate emergency.

Among the actions announced are:

Strengthen surveillance and control over the activities of the agents of the national energy system, including visits to hydroelectric plants and thermal generators, as well as closer support to the energy dispatch led by XM.

Schedule publication of visits to system agents, in coordination with the Superintendence of Public Services.

Direct communication with all companies to expand the information about the status of the operation and efficiently articulate actions.

Furthermore, they announced regulatory measures aimed at facilitating financial viability of energy marketers, increase supply and promote the efficient use of demand, with the aim of guaranteeing the country’s energy supply.

Among these measures, theissuing decrees and resolutions to facilitate the entry of more energy into the systemencourage self-generation and existing generation, and improve system efficiency to promote energy savings.

The Minister also announced the entry into operation of the Termocentro Thermal Plant for April 22, which will guarantee the entry of approximately 272 MW of additional energy to the national electrical system.

With the entry of renewable generation and the use of available surplus energy from large consumers, we will increase the capacity of the system by at least 100 MW.

The CREG measures that facilitate the early entry of renewable projects will inject approximately another 100 MW into the energy system.

The equivalence of this energy is close to 5% of national demand.

Finally, it was resolved provide incentives to those citizens and companies that contribute to the care and efficient use of energy.

The Ministry of Mines and Energy reaffirmed its commitment to timely report on new measures to address the country’s energy situation, calling for collaboration and joint work of all sectors of society to overcome these challenges.
