The Circular Economy area plays a fundamental role in the objective of Stellar to become a company with net zero carbon emissions by 2038. This implies not only the commitment to electrify its range of vehicles across all the group’s brands, but also to implement a comprehensive plan based on the 4R strategy: Reman , Repair, Reuse and Recycle.

As part of this project, John Elkann, Chairman of Stellantis, and Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis, have inaugurated operations and attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the Circular Economy Hub, located in the Stellantis Mirafiori complex in Italy. This Hub is now being launched in these iconic FIAT facilities, with remanufacturing operations for engines, gearboxes and high-voltage batteries for electric vehicles, as well as vehicle reconditioning and scrapping, with plans to add more activities.

With an investment of 40 million euros, the Circular Economy Hub plans to employ 550 people by 2025, having 73,000 square meters, using refurbished facilities to house a sustainable manufacturing and consumption model. They estimate that this Circular Economy Business Unit will generate more than 2,000 million euros of income by 2030 as part of the Dare Forward 2030 plan.

“The Circular Economy Hub brings together a set of competencies and activities aimed at creating a high-performance center of excellence in Europe,” said Carlos Tavares, Stellantis CEO. «As we grow in this area, we are industrializing the recovery and sustainable reuse of materials, and creating new technologies and advanced capabilities. “We know that our commitment to remanufacturing, repairing, reusing and recycling will not only alleviate pressure on the planet, but will also bring financial value to Stellantis, safeguarding our shared future as we rapidly transform our production and consumption business model.”

“This new investment by our company here in Turin demonstrates Stellantis’ commitment to Italy in the context of the evolution of our industry and also the ability of our communities to renew themselves by building their future,” said John Elkann, Stellantis Chairman. “When all stakeholders and Stellantis share the same ambition and agree on a common path, ideas become reality, and the Circular Economy Hub we inaugurated today is proof of this. “It will be a model plant in the automobile sector that combines environmental respect with economic development.”

Specifically, this new center will deal with remanufacturing processes (Reman). Used, worn or defective components, such as motors, gearboxes and electric vehicle batteries, are dismantled, cleaned and remanufactured according to the original specifications of the part manufacturers, maintaining the same level of quality. The facility is expected to handle more than 50,000 remanufactured parts by 2025, a figure that will increase to 150,000 by 2030.

Mirafiori also becomes a sorting center (Reman, Recycle). Some 2.5 million used parts, known as cores, will supply the facility’s remanufacturing and recycling activities by 2025, a figure that will increase to 8 million by 2030.

A third process is vehicle reconditioning (Repair, Reman and Reuse) whereby vehicles will be cosmetically and mechanically repaired using new, remanufactured or used parts and then reintroduced through SPOTiCAR, the used vehicle program certified by the Stellantis manufacturer, and the Stellantis &You, Sales and Services network.

This Hub also houses a vehicle scrapping center (Recycle, Reman and Reuse). At the end of their life cycle, vehicles become a source of parts that can be remanufactured, reused or used as material for recycling.

Global electrification

In addition to supporting its core activities, the Circular Economy Hub complements recent actions undertaken by Stellantis to strengthen its global electrification ecosystem. The operations include the partnership with Orano to carry out pretreatment operations in the electric vehicle battery recycling process in order to recover cobalt, nickel and lithium from the waste of gigafactories and from the vehicles at the end of its useful life.

The SUSTAINera Valorauto SAS joint venture has also been established with Galloo to manage vehicles at the end of their useful life; the collaboration with Qinomic to develop the conversion to electric (retrofit) of light commercial vehicles, and the establishment of strategic alliances aimed at obtaining raw materials for the batteries of electric vehicles, and six gigafactories planned in Europe and North America.

Finally, the opening of its first “Battery Technology Center” in the Mirafiori complex has been announced to carry out internal tests and develop batteries for electric vehicles.
