Arson Attack Damages Historic Beth Israel Congregation in Jackson, Mississippi
A devastating arson attack severely damaged Beth Israel Congregation, Jackson, Mississippi’s only synagogue, early Saturday morning, prompting a multi-agency investigation and raising concerns about rising antisemitism. Authorities have charged one individual in connection with the fire, which caused extensive damage to the synagogue’s library and sacred texts.
The Jackson Fire Department responded to a 911 call shortly after 3 a.m.Saturday, discovering flames and smoke billowing from the historic building. According to Charles Felton, Jackson fire Department chief of fire investigations, the fire was deliberately set in the synagogue’s library, resulting in the total loss of its contents. “All contents in that library are destroyed. There’s not much that can be retrieved from the library area,” he stated in an interview with NPR on sunday.while the main structure sustained smoke and soot damage, the library bore the brunt of the destruction.
The incident has deeply shaken the congregation, founded in 1860.Zach Shemper, president of Beth Israel Congregation, expressed his shock, telling Mississippi Public Broadcasting, “Crazy things happen all over the world and nothing really hits home until it actually hits directly home…When it hits home, it’s just hard. Honestly, I’m still trying to wrap my own head around it.” shemper emphasized the congregation’s resilience, stating, “As Jackson’s only synagogue, Beth Israel is a beloved institution, and it is the fellowship of our neighbors and extended community that will see us through.”
The fire resulted in the destruction of two Torahs, the central religious objects in Judaism, and damage to five others.Remarkably, a Torah that survived the Holocaust, protected within a glass display case, remained unharmed.The synagogue’s Tree of Life plaque, commemorating significant life events of congregants, was also destroyed. Damage was concentrated in the library, administrative offices, and lobby.
Investigators were able to identify a suspect through surveillance video showing an individual wearing a hoodie and mask pouring liquid from a can inside the synagogue, and also information received from a local hospital. According to Felton, the suspect confessed to involvement in the fire after being interviewed at the hospital, where they were treated for possible burns. The Jackson Fire Department has filed arson charges, and federal authorities are considering potential hate crime charges. The FBI’s Jackson office confirmed its collaboration with local law enforcement in the ongoing investigation.
