Lawrie, 15, Continues Historic Lakeside Run, Books Semi-Final Spot
A dominant performance from teenage darts prodigy Mitchell Lawrie has propelled him into the semi-finals of the Lakeside Championship.The young Scot secured his place with a commanding 4-0 victory over Francois Schweyen on Friday night, continuing a remarkable run at the iconic venue.
Lawrie, who only turned 15 last month, has quickly become the name on everyone’s lips in the world of darts. The pair traded impressive ton-plus checkouts in a tightly contested first set, but Lawrie ultimately prevailed, sealing the set with a clinical 16-darter.
From there, the match tilted decisively in Lawrie’s favor. He effortlessly took the second and fourth sets 3-0, showcasing a level of composure and skill beyond his years. The third set was punctuated by a stunning 124 finish, further cementing his dominance.
the young star maintained an impressive average of 92.06 throughout the match,consistently exceeding a score of 90. This victory also marks a critically important milestone in Lakeside history, as Lawrie has become the youngest player ever to win a match at the venue. He surpassed the previous record held by Luke Littler, who reached the last-32 in 2022 at the age of 15.
Lawrie will now face fellow teenager Jenson Walker in the semi-finals, promising a thrilling contest between two of the sport’s rising stars.
Elsewhere on Friday evening, Jimmy van Schie and Shane McGuirk delivered a captivating Lakeside classic. The match featured a barrage of high-scoring finishes, including three-ton plus checkouts and an impressive 14 maximums. 2024 winner McGuirk started strongly, winning the first set 3-0. Though, van Schie mounted a spirited comeback, leveling the scores with a strong third set highlighted by finishes of 76 and 127.
The third set proved to be a nail-biter, with van Schie initially taking a 2-0 lead with an 11-darter. McGuirk battled back to 2-2 before van Schie ultimately secured the set with a 17-darter going into the break. The subsequent sets were closely fought, but van Schie consistently found an edge, winning three legs consecutively in the fourth set and holding throw three times in the fifth to close out the match with a 97.36 average.
Known as ‘The Dutch sequoia’, van Schie will now face Sybren Gijbels in the semi-finals.
