Mizzou Swimming & Diving Dominate Home Opener, Overcome Early Season Setback

Missouri’s swimming and diving teams delivered a resounding victory in their home opener on November 1, decisively defeating both the McKendree Bearcats and Vanderbilt Commodores. The Tigers combined for wins in 29 of 32 events, signaling a strong rebound after a challenging start to the season.

Men’s Team Secures Convincing win

The men’s team showcased its strength against McKendree, achieving a final score of 213.5 to 85.5.This victory comes on the heels of a tough loss to Purdue on October 18, a contest that served as a crucial learning experience for the team.

Women’s Team Sweeps Competition

The women’s team demonstrated even greater dominance, securing wins against both Vanderbilt (236-57) and McKendree (244-40). This dual victory underscores the depth and talent within the program.

Resilience and Process Highlighted by Coaching Staff

“The big win was executing our process very well,” stated the team’s head coach, Andrew Grevers. The coach emphasized the importance of learning from the earlier loss to Purdue, acknowledging its value in building team resilience. “We were exposed, Purdue was good…That’s good to get punched in the face like that so to speak and see how resilient our team was, and see that they didn’t fold or crumble, but got hungry for more.”

Players Driven by Desire for Improvement

That renewed determination was evident in the performance of sophomore Matthew Judkins, who echoed the sentiment of the coaching staff. “We had a bit of a chip on our shoulder after Purdue,” Judkins said. “And we kind of just wanted to come in here and swim faster than that, and we did.”

Record-Breaking Performances Abound

The Tigers’ performance was marked by a wave of personal bests. According to Grevers,”We’re talking personal bests, which at this level in the season is not common. I’m pretty confident we’re well into the double digits for today, so that’s a massive day.”

Luke Nebrich, a sophomore, led the charge, winning all four of his events. Notably, he finished the 50-yard freestyle in 19.03 seconds, surpassing the NCAA qualifying time from the previous year.Quinlan Gould, a junior transfer from Arizona State, also excelled, securing first place in three events and setting a new career-best time of 46.47 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke – an improvement over his previous record of 47.31 seconds set in january.

Women’s Team Sees Strong Freshman and Veteran Contributions

On the women’s side, freshman Libby Bakker, junior Zara Zallen, and senior Karolina Bank each secured at least three victories. Zallen had a especially impressive day, winning the 200-yard medley relay, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle, and the 400-yard freestyle relay. Bank’s time of 1:00.10 in the 100-yard breaststroke was nearly three seconds faster than her nearest non-Missouri competitor and over two seconds ahead of teammate Paige Striley’s second-place finish. Bakker’s three wins also resulted in three personal bests.

Looking Ahead

Grevers expressed optimism about the team’s potential, stating, “Hopefully, this is just the tip of the iceberg.” The Mizzou diving team will next compete at the georgia Tech Invitational from November 13-15. The full swimming and diving team will return to the Mizzou Aquatic Centre to host the Mizzou Invite from November 20-22.
