Triple H Draws Sharp Contrast Between WWE Storytelling and MMA Booking
WWE’s Chief Content Officer, Paul “Triple H” Levesque, asserts that the creative processes behind professional wrestling and mixed martial arts are fundamentally different, despite both industries relying heavily on compelling personalities. Levesque made the comments during a recent appearance on the All-In podcast, which was recorded in September but released today.
The discussion arose from a question regarding whether WWE feels pressure to increase the physicality of its product in response to the surging popularity of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Levesque responded by characterizing the two organizations as “total opposites,” while acknowledging that both thrive on captivating stars.
“We tell stories,” Levesque explained. “People within our business sometimes take this wrong, but we don’t write the shows based on ‘That’ll be a great match.’ We write it on the stories that we can create, the protagonist, the antagonist, how does that work with each other, telling stories that can resonate with people that maybe they’ve experienced in their real life, some type of fantastical version of that.”
This emphasis on narrative distinguishes WWE’s approach, according to Levesque. He likened the long-term planning of WWE storylines to the intricate plotting of the Marvel Universe, where interconnected narratives unfold across multiple installments.
“I would say we’re much more akin to, like, the Marvel Universe, where you’re planning out long term where the movies fit and how they go with all the characters than we are direct MMA,” Levesque stated. He contrasted this with the more immediate focus of MMA, where match bookings often center on skill and potential for competitive uncertainty. “At the end of the day, direct MMA is — you’re booking matches and the interest is, ‘That guy’s really good. He’s really good. I’m not sure who’s going to win. Let’s put them together.’ When you get the right personalities involved, then it explodes.”
The comparison takes on added significance given the recent consolidation of ownership. Both WWE and UFC are now under the TKO Group umbrella, led by Endeavor CEO Ari Emanuel. Despite this shared corporate structure, Levesque’s comments underscore the distinct philosophies guiding the creative direction of each organization.
