A remarkable display of leadership has been recognized as pat Murphy of the Milwaukee Brewers and Stephen Vogt of the Cleveland Guardians were both named Managers of the Year for a second consecutive year on Tuesday night. The awards, persistent by voting from the Baseball Writers’ Association of America, highlight exceptional performance and strategic acumen during the 2024 season.
Murphy Secures National League Recognition
Pat Murphy received an overwhelming 27 of 30 first-place votes, solidifying his position as the national League’s top manager. He bested Rob Thomson of the Philadelphia Phillies and Terry Francona of the Cincinnati Reds in the balloting. “This is a tremendous and well-deserved honor for the second year in a row,” stated Matt arnold, Brewers president of baseball operations.
Murphy’s success marks only the second time a National League manager has achieved this feat in consecutive years since bobby Cox led the Atlanta braves to victory in both 2004 and 2005. The Brewers, under Murphy’s guidance, finished the season with a major league-best record of 97-65, setting a new franchise benchmark.
Their journey to the top wasn’t without challenges. After starting July in second place in their division, the Brewers embarked on an astonishing run, winning 29 of 33 games, including a remarkable 14-game winning streak – another organizational record. This surge propelled them past the Chicago Cubs, whom they later eliminated in the National League Division Series before falling to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the championship series.
Murphy, who will turn 67 on November 28, brought a wealth of experience to the role, having served as the Brewers’ assistant coach for eight seasons prior to being promoted following craig Counsell’s departure to the Cubs in November 2023.He previously managed at the college level, including stints at Notre Dame and Arizona State, and also served as interim manager for the San Diego Padres in 2015.
Vogt Leads Guardians to Historic Comeback
In the American League, stephen Vogt secured the Manager of the Year award with 17 of 30 first-place votes, edging out John Schneider of the Toronto Blue Jays and Dan Wilson of the Seattle Mariners. Vogt’s victory comes after leading the Guardians to a second straight American League Central Division title.
The Guardians’ season was defined by resilience. Despite falling 15.5 games behind the Detroit Tigers early in July and 11 games behind at the beginning of September, they orchestrated a stunning comeback, ultimately clinching their division title on the final day of the season. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, this represents the largest mid-season comeback in Major League Baseball history.
Vogt, a 41-year-old former player who retired at the end of the 2022 season after a 10-year Major League career, transitioned seamlessly into coaching. He spent a season as a bullpen coach with the Seattle Mariners before being hired by the Guardians in November 2023. His leadership was lauded by those around him. “He’s a clear leader in this institution, he’s really good at his job and I’m very proud to work with him,” said Jays general manager Ross Atkins.
