Zaragoza plays a leading role in the automobile industry: General Motors opened its largest production plant in Europe in 1982, a factory from which millions of units have been produced and which now, under the umbrella of the Stellantis group, produces the legendary Corsa, but also models from Citroën, Peugeot and, in a few months, Lancia, generating a top-level industrial hub in Europe for which the creation of a battery ‘gigafactory’ is even being considered. On the other hand, the city has lived with its back to its role as an automobile industrial power… until now, since Mobility City has arrived to revolutionize the cultural, business and leisure offer with a unique proposal: a Museum within a bridge.

The Ibercaja Foundation has been in charge of taking one of the most recognized buildings of the 2008 Water Expo, the bridge by architect Zaha Hadid, and turning it into an essential place to visit if we go to the Aragonese capital.

The Bridge rises over the Ebro in the area that was developed for the exhibition in 2008. Since then, all the buildings have found a social, educational or institutional use, and the last one to arrive is this one. Automobile Museum of the 21st century. Zaragoza wants to become a leading city in mobility, and it has the right size, neither too big nor small, to be the laboratory of ideas that gives rise to that ecological mobility, without accidents and without traffic jams that we all dream of.

All this is reflected in Mobility. What we were in mobility, what we are and what, probably, we will be. There are three different spaces on the Bridge: the one most used is the conventional ‘through’ bridge, open and free to the public, and where many pieces are already shown that reflect how mobility is changing: electric cars, air and autonomous taxis, or attendees who move alone through the museum show us some of the most innovative technologies we have today – electric or hydrogen cars, for example – and the different ways in which we are going to move in the coming years.

The only museum installed on a FP bridge

If, in addition to crossing the bridge, we want to enter the exhibition area, we will be surprised by the cars on display: we travel from the beginning to the present of the combustion engine with cars like the fantastic Bugatti Chiron, the most powerful car in the world with 1,200 HP. , to legendary prototypes in Le Mans or Formula 1. True fans will enjoy the Jaguar, Ferrari or Lotus exhibited in the Aragonese museum, a delight for lovers of the classics and which allows connecting the avant-garde with the past.

After slowly discovering this beautiful area, we move on to a tour of the world of transport: boats, trains, aviation and automobiles are explained in an educational way for children and adults, to understand where we come from and where we are going. In this field, that of the future, we understand many of the things that happen right now: batteries removed from electric cars, completely open chassis that allow us to see the location of the batteries or the mechanics, current components that seem to have come from the future, such as drivers, lights or multimedia equipment… and mobility, a lot of mobility: from Elon Musk’s Hyperloop train to vertical takeoff airborne taxis, and the famous ‘eVTOL’ that in the coming years could revolutionize the way we travel through cities.

The museum culminates in its upper part with an interactive area: playing video games and using virtual reality glasses to understand what happens around us when we drive a new mobility vehicle.

The ‘passage’ areas of the bridge change their content every few weeks FP

The visit, fully explained by the interactive assistants, will take us a couple of hours, touring a magnificent building as important as the content. The final point of Mobility is a conference room open to all types of events and which is already a point of reference not only for Aragonese society: more and more national events, such as the upcoming Impulso 817 awards in October), are held in this place.

Mobility City is an excellent idea that allows us to fully immerse ourselves in the challenges of new mobility, involve the city of Zaragoza in the future of the automobile and understand that the automobile and mobility are much more than factories, they are a hub of wealth and technology. capable of moving the economy of a country, as happens in ours, the second largest vehicle producer in Europe after Germany and in the TOP 10 global automobile manufacturing company.

A visit to Mobility seems essential to us so that children and adults can understand more about the mobility that is coming, and we only miss more space so that the cars and ideas can shine in greater splendor. Will Mobility work on a future expansion? It is too early to know, but for now Zaragoza is already on the map of museums that you need to know, and in this case it is a very interactive one that tells us about both the past, the present and the future of the history of the automobile.
