Sat, 11:25 · Apple Services · cmk For several hours, some Apple users have been plagued by a strange phenomenon: those affected have been automatically logged out of all Apple services including iCloud and iMessage on all devices. There are countless reports on the topic on forums and social media – but not all customers seem to be affected.

Password no longer valid
If those affected try to log in again with their Apple ID, they will only receive a message that the password is no longer valid or that Apple cannot currently process the request. Resetting the password usually works so that customers regain access to their Apple ID. At least the saved data on iCloud will still be there after resetting the password.

Additional hurdle: theft protection
However, when logging in again, an otherwise very useful function is now a major hurdle: If the additional theft protection is activated, users can only log in to the devices again at specified locations. If you’re traveling, for example, this is a big problem – especially since services like iMessage or iCloud can’t be used.

App-specific passwords also gone
After resetting the password, there is another problem: the app-specific passwords that were assigned to log in to third-party services are no longer available. If you use many services that access iCloud, this can become a major nuisance.

Reason unclear
Unfortunately, it is currently unclear how widespread the problem is – not everyone is affected by this annoying problem, but reports on social media suggest that a significant number are struggling with these difficulties. It is not ruled out that the problems are due to an attack on Apple’s infrastructure. Those affected should wait a few hours to see if they can then log in again with the original password if they are not immediately dependent on Apple services.
