Science can be explained so simply that even a beaver can understand it, said moderators Nguyen-Kim and Marie Meimberg. This also creates an emotional access to it.

Leipzig.

In order to better understand scientific findings and their effects, the moderators Mai Thi Nguyen-Kim and Marie Meimberg want to bring together the natural sciences and the humanities. “We bring together what belongs together,” said Nguyen-Kim at the Leipzig Book Fair.

She has long suffered from the fact that “natural sciences are freak sciences.” Together the women published the children’s book series “BiBiBiber has a question.”

The friends came up with the idea for the series during long conversations with each other about scientific topics, said Meimberg, who, according to her, doesn’t know much about the scientific topics that her friend regularly deals with. “Then she explains it to me until I know that now I can explain it to a beaver – or a child,” says Meimberg.

The aim of the books is to create an emotional approach to topics such as climate change. “We want knowledge not just to be information, but also for knowledge to be touching,” said Meimberg.

The team of authors also wants to give hope

If children were taken seriously and allowed to deal with difficult topics – including grief and dying – they would be able to understand the topics more easily, said Nguyen-Kim. “If you don’t throw children off with a short answer, then they will connect the connections on their own.” At the same time, the team of authors also wanted to give hope by explaining difficult things. “I believe in people and in the fact that we create. That’s what we want to convey,” said the chemist.

Nguyen-Kim, whose real name is Mai-Thi Leiendecker, has become known, among other things, through her YouTube channel “maiLab”. She regularly published content on scientific topics there until April 2023. The author is also a member of the Senate of the Max Planck Society.

Meimberg has produced music and films in the past, and she also has a YouTube channel named after her. There she dealt with various social issues. As a columnist she was awarded the Grimme Prize. (dpa)
