Kozhikode ∙ Urology department theater and ICU of Kozhikode Medical College Hospital were closed due to mold infestation. Two people who received kidney transplants from the theater got infections. The mold infection was revealed after a kidney transplant recipient noticed a change in the color of his urine. Then the second person was also subjected to examination.

The doctors say that there were no health problems as they were given timely expert treatment. One was admitted to the intensive care unit and the other to the pay ward. The theater used for plastic surgery, cardiothoracic surgery and abdominal surgery was temporarily given to the urology department.

Arrangements were made to use the urology department on days when the three departments did not have surgery. The cause of the infection is said to be water from the air conditioner entering the theater. Repair department personnel inspected and solved the problem. The swab is taken from here and sent to the microbiology lab for testing. Open the theater only after getting the result the next day.

No mold inspection expert

The senior scientific assistant who conducts mold testing in the microbiology department of the medical college has retired on May 31. No replacement has been appointed.
