Medical Outreach in Mountain Province Serves Over 250 Residents, Advances UN Sustainable Development Goals

A collaborative medical mission delivered crucial healthcare services to underserved communities in the Philippines, demonstrating the power of partnerships and a commitment to global health objectives. The Medical Outreach Missions Fellowship Initiative (MOMFI), in partnership with Medical Koinonia for Community Outreach Missions and Cordillera Eagles Region 1, successfully completed a free medical outreach in Barangay Sadsadan, Bauko, Mt. Province, on June 7, 2025.

Expanding Access to Healthcare in Rural Philippines

The mission provided vital medical attention to over 254 pediatric and adult patients. Led by physicians Dr. Roberto E. Tolentino, Dr. Therese Tolentino, and Dr. Leonora Benedito, the outreach leveraged the dedication of student volunteers from Saint Louis University (SLU) – School of Medicine (SOM), alongside members of Medical Koinonia. This collaborative effort underscores the importance of integrating academic institutions and community organizations in addressing healthcare disparities.

A Model of Integrated Service Delivery

The success of the mission hinged on the coordinated mobilization of various departments under Cordillera Eagles Region 1. Teams specializing in Registration, Surgery, EENT (Eyes, Ears, Nose, and Throat), OB/Surgery, Pharmacy, and Control worked seamlessly together, showcasing the strength of teamwork and service learning in a community-based healthcare setting. “This mission exemplifies how a unified approach can maximize impact and reach those most in need,” stated a senior official involved in the operation.

Aligning with Global Development Priorities

The outreach directly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3), Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10), and Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17). By providing free medical consultations and treatment, the mission actively contributes to improving health outcomes and reducing health inequities within the target community. The initiative’s collaborative nature also serves as a model for achieving broader sustainable development objectives through strategic partnerships.

The MOMFI outreach in Barangay Sadsadan represents a significant step towards strengthening healthcare access in rural Philippines and demonstrates a powerful commitment to global health equity.
