Following this, cases of monkey measles were also detected in the states of Delhi and Hyderabad. In this situation, a 22-year-old youth who was suffering from monkey measles died suddenly in Kerala. It is confirmed that he died of monkeypox.

A teenager has died of monkey measles in Kerala. We are taking monkeypox seriously. Tomorrow (i.e. today) I am going to hold an important meeting with Health Minister Sudhakar and the Health Department on preventing the spread of monkey measles in Karnataka.

During this consultation, various matters including screening of travelers from abroad and setting up of laboratories are to be discussed. We are also going to discuss measures to be taken to control monkey measles, guidelines and arrangements for medicines.

Preventive works

In this situation, the Karnataka Government’s Health Department has issued new guidelines regarding measures to be taken to prevent the spread of monkey measles across the state, including the capital, Bengaluru. It states:-

Monkey measles is spreading in the country. The World Health Organization has declared monkey measles a public health emergency. The Department of Health has already issued a guideline. 1.30 crore people live in Bengaluru. Therefore, there is a need to seriously monitor here. The Chief Health Officer, District Monitoring Officer, all Zonal Health Officers should actively carry out monkey disease prevention work.

21 days of isolation

Special teams should be appointed at railway stations, airports and bus stations across the state, including Bengaluru, to conduct physical examination of passengers. Doctors in city primary health centers and hospitals should report details of patients with symptoms of monkey measles.

Appropriate training should be given to the medical staff to trace the contacts of the patient, carry out surveillance and testing. Symptomatic people should be tested for monkeypox. Confirmed patients should self-isolate for 21 days. Patients should be allowed to walk in public only after all symptoms have cleared.

Awareness

Awareness should be created among the public about monkey measles. Blood samples should be collected from people with symptoms of monkey measles and sent to the laboratory. All guidelines issued by the Health Department must be followed without fail.
