Taco Dowler’s Historic Punt Return sparks Montana State to Dominating Win Over Northern Arizona
Montana State University’s No. 5 ranked football team delivered a decisive 34-10 victory against No. 13 Northern Arizona on Saturday, fueled by a record-breaking special teams play and a resilient defensive performance. The Bobcats overcame a slow start and early deficit to secure their first road win against a ranked opponent since November 18, 2024, at UC Davis.
The game began with a surprising surge from Northern Arizona, taking a 7-0 led early in the first half. As a Scripps Sports play-by-play broadcaster noted,”If I’m being honest with you,I didn’t expect this game to be seven-nothing almost halfway through the second quarter.” However, the momentum dramatically shifted thanks to the exceptional play of Montana State wide receiver Taco Dowler.
Dowler’s 90-yard punt return for a touchdown – the longest in Montana State history, surpassing Sean Hill’s 86-yard record from 1991 – ignited the Bobcats and fully altered the complexion of the contest. According to Dowler, “I think 10 to 15 kids on our team could have probably done that.” He added, “I didn’t even get touched until the very end, and it was a shoestring tackle, or tried to be a shoestring tackle. But I just caught the ball and ran.”
The special teams score awakened the Montana State offense. Quarterback Justin Lamson connected with wide receiver Jabez Woods for a 79-yard touchdown on the ensuing drive – the Bobcats’ longest play from scrimmage this season. The Bobcat defense then effectively shut down any remaining offensive threat from Northern Arizona.
Head coach Brent Vigen downplayed the notion of a “statement win,” emphasizing that his team was simply focused on executing their game plan. “Each one of these conference games are their own,and we just want to keep piling them up,” vigen stated. Despite committing 10 penalties and five punts, the Bobcats found ways to capitalize on opportunities, showcasing their resilience.
Woods led the Bobcats’ receiving corps with a career-high 100 yards on three catches, scoring his second consecutive touchdown. Dowler also contributed offensively with two catches for 45 yards, including a 34-yard reception where he evaded a tackle and drew a 15-yard penalty. Dowler’s confidence and competitive spirit were on full display, as he remarked, “How can you not respect me after I make plays?”
The Montana State defense proved equally dominant, holding Northern Arizona to just 39 yards of offense in the final three quarters. Despite the Lumberjacks controlling time of possession (35:33 to 24:27) and running 26 more plays, the Bobcats limited them to a mere field goal. Safety Bryant Meredith, who recorded his first career interception, highlighted the defensive strategy: “We wanted to walk in here, prove ourselves…we did what we had to do.” The defensive line applied consistent pressure, registering two sacks, seven quarterback hurries, and 10 tackles for loss
