40.9% of the working population in the Basque Country updated their agreements in the first four months of the year, according to the report prepared for the months of March and April by the Labor Relations Council (CRL). The institution highlighted that this is one of the highest percentages in recent years and that the average salary increase in current agreements is 3.57%.

The president of the CRL, Tomás Arrieta, advanced on Thursday that the salary increase for the agreements signed in Euskadi only in the month of April was 5.7%, 0.7% more than the national average.

The report for the months of March and April of this year reflects that in an environment “marked by the rise in inflation”, which grew 4.1% annually last month, the Basque unemployment rate stood during the first quarter at 8.7%, while affiliation to Social Security reached “historical highs”. In total, this reached an average of 997,243 affiliates during the month of April.

The figure of 40.9% of workers who have updated their agreements this 2023 represents one of the “highest percentages in recent years”, according to the CRL, when compared with people who were in the same situation in April past exercises.

In any case, the renewal of agreements during the four-month period affects 13.9% of the working population, a percentage that does not include the working population covered by agreements reached and pending registration and publication, such as those of the iron and steel industry and hospitality in Gipuzkoa, or passenger transport by road, home help and residences in Bizkaia.

The salary increase of 3.57% registered in Euskadi corresponds to the 3.92% that have risen on average in the agreements negotiated in the autonomous community, added to the 2.99% that have increased, on average, the salary of those agreed at the national level.

The increases contemplated in the agreements where an agreement or a pre-agreement has been reached, whose registration and publication will take place in the coming months, are also taken into account. Arrieta pointed out that the average weighted increase in current agreements negotiated in the Basque Country will be “predictably around 4.7%”.
