MADRID, 18 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Moroccan authorities announced this Wednesday the rescue of 53 migrants, 47 of sub-Saharan origin and six Moroccans, who were in an “inflatable boat” heading to the Canary Islands, amid an increase in this type of operations during the last weeks.

The General Staff of the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces has explained that the interception of the vessel occurred during the same day 55 kilometers north of the port of the city of Tan Tan, in the south of the country and near the Canary Islands.

Furthermore, he explained that those rescued have received the necessary primary medical care before being placed at the disposal of the Royal Gendarmerie to carry out the corresponding administrative procedures, as reported by the Moroccan state news agency, MAP.

In 2023, the Moroccan authorities intercepted nearly 87,000 migrants in an irregular situation who had the objective of reaching Spain in various operations carried out in the waters of the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, as well as in other parts of the African country.

The balance of the Spanish Ministry of the Interior, as of January 3, 2024, shows a total of 56,852 migrants who have arrived irregularly in Spain in 2023, which was 82.1 percent more than in the same period of 2022, when 31,219 arrived. In this way, 2023 became a record year in migration since it was the second with the most irregular arrivals to Spain, after 2018.
