Moscow Mayor’s Office did not agree on the procession in memory of Markelov and Baburova

Moscow authorities refused to agree on a march in memory of lawyer Stanislav Markelov and Novaya Gazeta journalist Anastasia Baburova, who were killed on January 19, 2009. This was announced by the ex-candidate for the State Duma, Mikhail Lobanov, who submitted a notice of the action. The reason for the refusal was the situation with the coronavirus.

“There was a call from the Moscow mayor’s office that an answer had been sent to the post office. It indicates that now the events are not coordinated in connection with the coronavirus pandemic and the decree of the mayor of the capital, “- said Mr. Lobanov to Interfax. According to him, most likely, on January 19, an event in memory of those killed will be held in the form of laying flowers at the place of their death, since this format does not require approval.

Last year, the Moscow mayor’s office did not agree on a march in memory of the victims for the same reason. It did not take place for the first time in 11 years. In the case of the murder of nationalist lawyer and journalist Nikita Tikhonov, they were sentenced to life in prison, and his wife Yevgenia Khasis, recognized as an accomplice, was sentenced to 18 years in prison. In February 2021, the ECHR found violations in the trial. The court considers that the members of the collegium could not be considered impartial as they read media materials about the crime. In July, the ECHR refused to review the decision on the biased verdict against the nationalists. In December, the Russian Supreme Court remitted the case for a new trial.

On the course of the case – in the material of “Kommersant” “Nationalists were brought back to court.”
