Most Germans See EU as Mediator between Moscow and Kiev | News from Germany about Germany | Dw

Almost two-thirds of German residents believe that in the escalating conflict between Russia and Ukraine, European states should more actively act as mediators. This is evidenced by the results of a study by Deutschlandtrend published on Thursday, January 6, which was commissioned by the public-law television channel ARD and the newspaper Die Welt by the Berlin Institute Infratest dimap.

This opinion is shared by 65 percent of the respondents, while in the western federal states this number reaches 67 percent, but in the eastern federal states it is significantly more than half (58 percent).

Sanctions against the RF

The question of possible EU and US sanctions against Russia is not so clear-cut. 47 percent of those polled were in favor of toughening penalties (3 percentage points more than in 2018), against 41 percent. At the same time, in the eastern regions of Germany, only 32 percent of respondents were in favor of tougher sanctions. In western Germany, 51 percent agree with tougher sanctions.

In addition, every second respondent (50 percent) cannot understand why the Russian side speaks of a sense of threat from the West, but 41 percent (and this is one percentage point more than in 2018) treats this position with understanding. Here, too, there is a noticeable difference between the western and eastern federal lands (40 and 47 percent, respectively, treat Moscow’s feelings with understanding).

Borrel in eastern Ukraine

A day earlier, on January 5, it was reported that the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell visited the contact line in the Luhansk region of Ukraine. Any military aggression against Ukraine will have huge consequences and a serious cost, and there can be no security in Europe without the security of Ukraine, the diplomat said.
