The woman is the one who takes care of the sons and daughters in 72% of Spanish couples, according to the second wave of the 2023 Conciliation Study, carried out by Edenred, on the occasion of Mother’s Day, which is celebrated next Sunday May 7.

From the study, based on a survey of more than 1,860 active parents, it can be deduced that, in case of need for childcare during the working day, the most common solution is for both the father and the mother to take care of it equally (40 %). However, in 26% of cases it is the mother who takes the child to the doctor or attends him on a day without school, compared to 10% in the case of the fathers.

In addition, the report highlights the role of grandparents and grandmothers since in 20% of cases they are used to solve this exceptional situation.

On the other hand, the document reveals that 73% of mothers have difficulties to reconcile, a figure higher than that of fathers, which reaches 64%. The percentage of mothers who are afraid of not meeting all the needs of their children (63%) is also higher than that of fathers (56%).

“Despite the fact that society has made progress in terms of equality, there are still differences between men and women, especially with regard to child care. In this way, organizations must work to facilitate reconciliation in both sexes, especially betting on labor flexibility and the inclusion of social benefits and flexible remuneration policies”, highlighted the CEO of Edenred Spain, Stanislas De Bourgues.

Improve reconciliation

Precisely, the demands of working fathers and mothers to improve conciliation are mainly focused on “more time” and “temporal and spatial flexibility”. In this sense, the most highly valued options are: intensive working hours, aid for childcare, more vacation days and more flexible hours.

The study also analyzes the employment situation after maternity and reveals that, after giving birth, 50% of Spanish women maintain the same employment situation as before maternity. Although, 25% of them have reduced their working hours and 22% have changed schedules or have requested an intensive working day. The mothers who have reduced their hours have done so, fundamentally, to be able to attend to their child personally (57%).

Asked about what they miss most from the period prior to maternity, women highlight two concepts: having more time for themselves and their partner (32%) and resting more (31%), followed by enjoying more leisure time, among which are included trips, concerts and shows (28%).

In addition, the study indicates that 62% of mothers have missed more work due to medical consultations and school appointments; and 93% consider that the four-month maternity leave is insufficient and demand an extension of more weeks.
