Thousands Gather for Mouse Door Opener Day in Ulm, Germany

Ulm, Germany – The Mouse Door Opener Day in Ulm was a huge success, attracting thousands of visitors, including families and children. The event took place at the disaster control center in the Danube Valley and provided a unique opportunity for the public to get an insight into various emergency vehicles.

A total of 750 registered children, accompanied by their parents or grandparents, attended the event. Additionally, countless unregistered families joined in, making it a memorable day for all. The highlight of the event was the display of a wide range of emergency vehicles from the DRK and ASB, as well as the Bundeswehr’s SAR 63 rescue helicopter in Baden-Württemberg.

However, due to safety regulations, visitors were not allowed to enter the rescue helicopter. A pilot explained to the families that the helicopter needed to be ready for immediate takeoff in case of an emergency. Nevertheless, families were able to explore other vehicles, including the DRK’s “Baby Muck” intensive care baby transporter, which enables medical treatment of premature and newborn children during transport. Other vehicles, such as civil protection vehicles, emergency medical and rescue vehicles, and ASB’s wish car, which grants the last wishes of seriously ill individuals, also drew the attention of curious onlookers.

Children were particularly impressed by the medical transport vehicle, where a young man was seen taking care of a mouse strapped onto a stretcher. The sight delighted a little girl, who exclaimed, “Look, Dad, the mouse is being taken care of!” However, her father jokingly expressed concern about the mouse potentially suffering from the hantavirus. The Teddy Clinic, housed in a tent and run by the Medical Faculty at the University of Ulm, also captivated young visitors. They had the opportunity to witness “X-ray images” of cuddly toys and experience their care just like real children.

Since 2011, Mouse Door Opener Day has provided an exclusive look behind the scenes of various facilities across Germany. This year, the large hall in the Ulm disaster control center opened its doors to showcase the emergency vehicles from the DRK and ASB. The Karlsruhe voluntary motorcycle squad, established in 2007, also participated in the event. They showcased their vehicles and demonstrated their ability to assist people stuck in traffic jams and secure accident scenes.

Unsurprisingly, many children were eager to sit on the motorbikes and quad bikes of the Karlsruhe squad. Proud parents snapped photos of their children enjoying the experience. It remains to be seen whether some of these young mouse fans will eventually join the blue light organizations and pursue careers in emergency services.

The Mouse Door Opener Day in Ulm was a resounding success, providing entertainment and educational experiences for visitors of all ages. It was indeed a day to remember, as families and children reveled in the opportunity to explore emergency vehicles and gain a deeper understanding of their vital role in society.]
