mRNA and vaccines at the heart of an Essential Debate between Professor Steve Pascolo and Professor Martin Zizi

DEBATE – A debate, but why debate in 2024 when several billion doses of messenger RNA vaccines have been injected, when the security agencies of many countries evaluate the profile of these therapies as a success and guarantee that its safety profile “ on “. Shouldn’t such a debate have taken place before the large-scale use of an experimental therapy? Was it really experimental? Have we put the cart before the horse at the risk of science losing its grandeur through an exacerbated politicization of belief in science? at the risk of dividing populations between pro mRNA and against?

Unfortunately, there was no debate throughout the pandemic. The TV shows only highlighted doctors extolling the merits of an experimental therapy (the clinical phase not being completed when it was put on the market at the end of 2020). For France-Soir and many researchers, this debate was essential. Two teachers answered the call, and they even asked for it, which in itself should be for each of us, common mortals, a guarantee of human and scientific quality. Two scientists agree to debate this subject after years of invective on social networks and on television, in a context where opponents of mRNA technology who call for speed not to be confused with haste, are being called anti-vax .

We therefore welcomed for this debate Professor Steve Pascolo who was one of the first injected with mRNA in 2003. Co-founder of CureVac, he left the company in 2006. Curevac developed the technology implementing the first pharmaceutical production (GMP ) of synthetic messenger RNA in the world and carried out the world’s first clinical studies on humans, including himself. Since 2017, he has developed an academic platform on mRNA in Zurich. Professor Pascolo declares a link of interest: he works with BioNTech.

On the other hand, Professor Martin Zizi, without any conflict of interest, stood out on X (txitter) with numerous responses to supporters of mRNA. Professor Zizi is a doctor and doctor in biophysics. He was Professor of Physiology (KULeuven and VUB), former epidemiological director of the Department of Defense, former scientific director and President of the Ethics Committee, former UN Advisor for biological disarmament and Unscom bio-inspector.

The debate, which we have decided to broadcast in its entirety, with sometimes heated exchanges and clear-cut positions on both sides, is worth listening to. Both parties have found common ground which demonstrates that it is necessary to debate and express oneself. After a two-hour interview, the two parties agreed to repeat a debate by responding more precisely to questions and comments from listeners.

The two professors are accompanied by Ms. Corinne Reverbel, Doctor in microbiology. She does not claim any expertise, other than understanding scientific language, which is sometimes complex for everyone, better than the general public. Her role here is to ask specific questions about mRNA vaccines.

It therefore seemed interesting to discuss five issues linked to this technology: the dose of the antigen produced, the biodistribution of the antigen, pharmacokinetics, the fidelity of mRNA translation and the temporary suppression of innate immunity in vaccinated people, this last point not having been addressed for reasons of time. These five points have already been raised in a video by Professor Martin Zizi.

Be patient to listen to the 2 hours 36 minutes of debate. The debate could at times have been heated, but always respectful. What a real scientific debate should always be. We thank them again for taking part in this exercise on France-Soir.

An exercise that we intend to repeat with more structure and a more structured time frame.
