Time.news – Japanese Haruki Murakamione of the best-known names in contemporary world literature, received the Princess of Asturias Award for “the uniqueness of its literature”, according to the jury’s motivation.
Most Japanese media echoed the news, explaining that it is one of “Europe’s most prestigious literary prizes”, as state broadcaster NHK underlined. It is the first time that the award has been given to a Japanese.
Murakami has been translated into fifty languages and has received other international literary awards such as the Franz Kafka and World Fantasy Award (both in 2006), the Hans Christian Andersen for Literature (2016), as well as awards in Japan such as the Tanizaki and the Yomiuri.
