Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg, the two millionaires at the helm of rival tech giants, spoke in June of a possible mixed martial arts (MMA) match between them. A few days ago they considered August 26 as the date.

“Everything in the camera frame will be ancient Rome, so nothing modern,” Elon Musk wrote on his X platform. “The fight will be managed by my and Zuck’s foundation,” he added.

Musk claims to have spoken with the head of government of Italy and with the Ministry of Culture of that country. “They have agreed on an epic location,” he said. In another message he added a single word: “Gladiator.”

Italian culture minister Gennaro Sangiuliano acknowledged having spoken with Musk about organizing a “big charity event” with historical reminiscences, according to a statement released this Friday.

“It will not be organized in Rome,” added Sangiuliano, who thus ruled out that it be in the Colosseum, as Musk had mentioned at the end of June.

The amount that could be raised, estimated at “several million euros, will be donated to two Italian children’s hospitals,” added the minister, who hopes to take the opportunity to “promote” the country.

“Everything that is done will pay tribute to Italy’s past and present,” Musk reported on the platform he bought last year for $44 billion.

“Dulce est desipere in loco” (it is good to lose your mind sometime), he also wrote, taking up, in Latin, a quote from the poet Horace.

The two tech giants have clashed for years over their opposing views of the world, from politics to artificial intelligence.

But the animosity between them has worsened when in July Zuckerberg and his Meta group (Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram) launched Threads, a direct competitor to Twitter, now renamed X.
