The authorities of the Japanese city of Kobe announced the first confirmed mutation of the “British” strain of coronavirus, which occurred domestically. A new type of virus was detected in a man who went to the doctors on May 17 due to mild abdominal pain.

After a PCR test, the patient was confirmed to have a coronavirus. In the course of the analysis, it was found that the male virus type had, in addition to the N501Y mutation characteristic of the “British” strain, the E484Q mutation, according to RIA Novosti. The man reportedly received home treatment and recovered fully on 27 May.

Formerly a well-known Japanese doctor, chairman of the Union of Physicians of Japan, Naoto Ueyama, said that holding the Olympic Games in a pandemic, when representatives of more than 200 countries will come to Tokyo, creates conditions for the emergence of a new “Tokyo Olympic strain” of coronavirus. He explained that people coming to Japan from over 200 countries around the world will bring “all the different mutant strains of the virus that exist in different places and they will be concentrated in Tokyo.”
