N. Mirza Dies After Falling Into Pond During Kannur Cleanup Drive

Seven-year-old N. Mirza died on Sunday morning after falling into a public pond in Kannur’s Panunda area during a community cleaning drive. Another child discovered her in the water, and she was rushed to a nearby hospital where medical staff confirmed she could not be saved.

The tragedy unfolded around 7 a.m. as residents gathered for a weekly community cleaning initiative organized by the Clean Green Panunda collective. Mirza, a second-grade student at Panunda UP School, left home early, around 6:30 a.m., to join the neighborhood volunteers. As work proceeded near the public pond, her hairband slipped off and landed on the concrete steps leading into the water.

Her family lives near the Eruvatti Panunda Social Education Library, where her father, Ranjith, works as a tailoring shop employee in Iritty, and her mother is Mafeeda.
