ENQUÃTE – The explosion in the number of these small shops over the past 3 years in Paris is starting to worry, as they threaten traditional businesses. Added to this are working and hygienic conditions which raise questions.
It’s impossible to miss them, as they swarm everywhere in major French cities. Nail salons – these small beauty institutes, independent or backed by a large group in the world of aesthetics which offer manicures and pedicures on the line – are more and more numerous in France , to the point of changing the linearity of certain streets. In Paris alone, their number has exploded in recent years, going from 278 in 2014, to 351 in 2017, 470 in 2020 and up to 565 in 2023, according to figures from a Study recently published by the City, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Parisian Urban Planning Workshop (Apur). That is an annual increase of 8.4%, reaching 20% over the last three years and more than 70% since 2018. An explosion which goes hand in hand with that of so-called businesses. «émergents», “reflection of new aspirations and developments in society”according to the study, but which does not fail to worry the public authorities.
